Sunday Strolls

The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation presents their Summer Stroll Series of historic walking tours beginning on Sunday, June 15 through Sunday, August 31 from 10:30AM-12PM. 

Tickets are $15 for SSPF Members and $20 for non-members and should be purchased in advance! Space is limited.

 

Members should contact the Foundation directly at (518) 587-5030 to reserve a ticket with your stroll pass.

Tours are rain or shine.
Allow 90 minutes.
Requires walking and standing and covers varied terrain.

There are NO physical tickets for the strolls, guests should check-in at the noted meeting location prior to the tour beginning.

Sunday, June 15, 2025
Lincoln Park
SSPF Member $15 | Non- Member $20
Take a stroll through Lincoln Park in Saratoga Spa State Park, a National Historic Landmark. Discover the park’s history from its early carbonic acid plants to the creation of the State Reservation in 1909 and the construction of the Lincoln and Washington Bathhouses in the 1920s.
This tour meets at the Washington Bathhouse (National Museum of Dance).

Historic Madison & Fifth Avenues
SSPF Member $15 | Non- Member $20

Join Debbie Studwell for the stroll, “Historic Fifth and Madison Avenues.” This tour highlights the diverse architectural styles and historic development of a significant neighborhood near the Saratoga Race Course, showcasing Saratoga’s growth from the late 1800s to the 1940s. The properties featured on this tour are contributors to the East Side Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The tour meets at the northeast corner of Nelson and Fifth avenues.

Wealth & Wellness: Franklin Square
SSPF Member $15 | Non- Member $20

Stroll leader Carrie Woerner, Assemblywoman and former Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Executive Director will highlight historic Franklin Square, Saratoga’s oldest residential neighborhood, during the Summer Sunday Stroll “Wealth & Wellness: Franklin Square.” Today, it is a veritable showcase of American architectural history.
This tour meets at the northwest corner of Division Street and Railroad Place.

Skidmore’s First Home
SSPF Member $15 | Non- Member $20

Join Debbie Studwell for a stroll around “Skidmore’s First Home.” Skidmore College acquired the grand houses on Union Avenue and surrounding streets to serve as dormitories, classrooms, and offices. New structures were erected when needed such as Moore Hall, also known as the ”Pink Palace.” In total, they acquired more than 80 buildings before moving to the current North Broadway Campus.
This tour meets at the southeast corner of Spring and Circular streets.

Mail Order Houses of Saratoga

Join the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and Madison C. Squires for the summer stroll “Mail Order Houses of Saratoga”. This tour features houses on East and Pinewood avenues and meets at the Northwest corner of Lake and East avenues. Squires will highlight the “Kit House” era – a time when the average person could not only put a check through the mail, but order and receive an entire house as well.
This tour meets at the NW corner of Lake and East Avenues.

Join Alexandra Morgan for the Summer Stroll, “Down in the Valley: Exploring the Gut.” Alexandra explores the area behind Broadway known as “The Gut,” which was home to many working-class and Jewish families who provided important contributions to the community.
This tour meets at the northwest corner of Putnam and Spring streets at the Hathorn Spring.

Horsin’ Around North Broadway

This stroll will highlight Saratoga Springs’ famed health, history, and horses. Saratoga Springs is home to the oldest sports venue in the United States, the Saratoga Race Course. The connection between horse racing and summer cottages is a long-standing tradition.
This tour meets in front of Witt Construction, 563 North Broadway.

Historic West Side
SSPF Member $15 | Non- Member $20

George Demers will lead guests through the diverse historic west side neighborhood where Saratoga Springs’ Irish and Italian immigrants and Black community lived. The tour will highlight the settlement of this neighborhood, its rebirth as an arts district, and the rehabilitations that took place in the early 2000s.
This tour meets at the Gideon Putnam burial ground locate on South Franklin Street.

Explore the area surrounding the Saratoga Race Course. This walking tour highlights the history of the Reading Rooms, National Museum of Racing & Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Training Track, and the Fasig-Tipton Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion.
This tour meets at the southeast corner of Nelson and Union avenues. This tour does not enter the Race Course.

Greenridge Cemetery and the Civil War

Join Gloria May as she strolls though the Greenridge cemetery telling the “yarns and tales” of those who answered President Lincoln’s call to save the Union during the Civil War.
This tour meets at the Sackett Gate entrance of Greenridge Cemetery located on Lincoln Avenue.
